One of the books that has remained on my children’s bookshelf is I Love the Night by Dar Hosta. Dar came to visit my daughter’s school back in 2009, and even autographed the book with a little message to both of my children. Since the school my daughter attends is for special needs kids only, I thought it was sweet that she was willing to give them her time and attention.
One of my favorite books growing up was Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. The book is 336 pages long and is recommended for children ages 10 and up. I bought a copy of the book for my daughter last year when she was 11 years of age. I ended up borrowing it from her and reading it again.
The book is about an orphan named Anne Shirley, who has bright red hair and a wild imagination. Mr. Cuthbert picks her up, but is shocked to find out that the orphanage sent over a girl. He and is sister Marilla had intended on a boy to help with the chores. They, of course, end up falling in love with Anne and decide to make her a permanent addition to their family. L. M. Montgomery even went on to add eight sequels to this precious book, continuing the story for avid fans like myself.
Not only do I think it is important spiritually that my kids also take part in their own devotions each morning, but I also believe it is a great stress reliever. Starting the day off with a simple life lesson and then prayer can do wonders for preparing my kids for the day to come.
One of the devotional books I used with my girls when they were younger was called The One Year Book of Devotions for Kids. It is part of a best-selling series. It includes 365 days of character building principles. Who doesn’t want their kids to have a reputable character?
The Ugly Duckling is a classic book written by Hans Christian Anderson. It is said to be perfect for children in grades one through five. I think its message is appropriate for any age, but you’d probably have to trick a teen into reading it to a younger child if you wanted them to benefit from the book.
The children’s book I love You, Stinky Face is a Scholastic book that was written by Lisa McCourt. My oldest daughter, who is now twelve, asked me to review this book for the blog because it was her favorite when she was younger. I’m surprised she still had the book in her closet, as she is of the age that believes anything associated with her youth is uncool.
