Another cute young reader book series that we found is called Ready Freddy! Written by Abby Klein, we follow a kindergarten boy named Freddy in a series of adventures that are very common in with our five to six year olds. Abby Klein has been a teacher for more than 15 years and puts her everyday experiences with her classroom right into the books so not only do our children relate to the books, but we as parents can too. The first book we read here at home is Tooth Trouble. Everyone but Freddy has lost at least one tooth already and has gotten to sign their name on the big tooth in class.
Freddy is really bummed out. Before it was him and his best friend that hadn’t lost a tooth and now, it was just him. The kids in class, especially the class bully, Max won’t stop teasing him and telling him that he is little baby. Freddy doesn’t understand why none of his teeth are even loose! Equipped with his lucky charm, a sharks tooth, he rubs it between his fingers trying to come up with an idea that will help him finally lose his first tooth and get his name up on the wall with the rest of the kids.
Freddy tries everything. He attempts using a string to tie around one tooth and his bedroom door knob. He gets interrupted by his neat freak mom in the process. To hide from her what he is doing, he quickly shoves all the string into his mouth, risking swallowing all of it. His sister suggests her method called the “5 ways to lose a tooth” as she slowly curls one finger at a time until she has a fist. Freddy is not up for that idea. Letting his sister punch him in the mouth isn’t what he had in mind.
His mother tries to make him feel better by telling him that she didn’t lose her first tooth until much later too. As a matter of fact, she didn’t lose any of her teeth until she was in the first grade. This doesn’t make Freddy feel any better at all and he’s tired of Max the bully calling him a little baby. Hoping to make him feel a little better, Freddy’s family heads out to get some ice cream. Freddy makes sure to get ice cream without nuts. He hates nuts…so why does he feel something crunchy in his mouth?
