The Story of Jonah is an Alice in Bibleland Storybook that was written by Alice Joyce Davidson and illustrated by Victoria Marshall. My daughter received this book as a little girl. The book doesn’t just go into the famous Bible story of Jonah like most of the other books published for kids. It is a story about Jonah that is told through a little girl named Alice.
The illustrations in this book are captivating, which is what younger children first notice when they decide which book they want read to them. What I like was the way that story was told, and how a life application was applied at the end. Children who are a bit older will appreciate how easy it is to read the book because the story is told in verses that rhyme.
Some of the scenes show Alice sitting off to the side observing the story as if she had been there when it happened. This helps children feel as if they are right there with Alice, watching what will happen to Jonah next. Alice is with Jonah when God tells him to go to Nineveh, when he hides, when he is spit out on dry land, and when he finally does what God had instructed him to do.
This book teaches children about the importance of obedience. It also teaches that there isn’t anything we do that God doesn’t see, so we cannot run and hide. At the same time, God is merciful and forgiving. He shows us love and compassion when we are sorry for what we have done wrong. We do not have to continue to hang our heads in shame, or hide from what we have done.
