Septimus Heap Book 5: Syren

On September 29, 2009 fans of Angie Sage and her Septimus Heap phenomenon will be rewarded for all their waiting by the latest installment of the series, Syren. I can’t wait to delve back into the world of the rambunctious and ever-getting-into-trouble Heaps—who sort of remind me of the Weasleys in the Harry Potter universe—and see what happens next in this compelling magical series.

We left off with the adventure at the House of Foryx, and we’ve been given a few of the characters’ own misgivings about their futures. While Simon’s desperately pining after the role of Extraordinary Wizard, Septimus isn’t sure he wants it though he is training for exactly that—and fiery Jenna has her doubts about becoming queen as well. Will Syren provide us with more clues about what will become of these characters and others?

Sage says that there will be a total of seven books in her series, and we will learn more in each book. She says that Syren could be compared with Robinson Crusoe, with “tentacles—lots of them.” Perhaps we’re in for Sage’s version of the Kraken?

She has also said that she’s got the ending of the series all planned out already, though things can sometimes change as she’s writing. “I write in the character’s shoes, so I’m never entirely sure what they’re going to do,” she says.

She also says that she might eventually write spin-off novels about different characters once the original series is finished, something that Harry Potter fans would love to have in that series as well. I would definitely love to read more about Alther, Snorri, and other characters should Sage follow through with her idea.

Is anyone else desperately awaiting the film version of the series? The word is that Warner Brothers has bought the rights to make the movie, but they’re waiting for the Harry Potter series is finished. Well, one more movie to go, then… Don’t you think they could at least film the thing now so it’s all ready to go once the HP series is finished? Sage is supposed to be an executive producer on the project, so hopefully it will stay quite true to the book. Then again, many Harry Potter fans have been disappointed (myself included) with the film adaptations, so you never know.

I’ve got September 29th written in my planner—in ink!—to pick up my copy; do you? Is anyone else excited about the release of Syren, and if so, what predictions do you have about the book?
