Like most little girls, my daughter loves fairies and everything magical. While she still loves her “scary” books and mystery books like Nancy Drew and The Clue Crew, she has found a new series to fall into. Daisy Meadows has created a cute book series called The Jewel Fairies. They are all under 100 pages making them perfect chapter books for new readers such as my little girl. Kicking the series off are the Jewel Fairies and the first one we were able to read about (the first book in any series is almost NEVER available at the library, but we learn to deal) was Scarlett the Garnet Fairy.
All the fairies live in Fairyland and all the magic in Fairyland is controlled by the jewels in the queen’s crown. Jack Frost, hungry for the fairies power and magic has stolen all seven of the jewels from the crown. Now all the magic in Fairyland is starting to fade away. What Jack Frost didn’t know when he took the jewels is that they are too powerful for him to have. His house started to melt away, so in anger, he threw all the jewels into the human world and his goblins to guard them. Now the fairies must find the jewels to restore order in both Fairyland and the human world.
Kirsty and Rachel are best friends and spending their school break together. These two are fortunate enough to meet the fairies and even get to see Fairyland. The fairies recruit the girls to help recover the missing jewels, if they can be brave enough to stand up to Jack Frost’s nasty goblins. Both the girls happily agree and wait for any sign that they may be close to a missing jewel. It doesn’t take long before they notice things just aren’t quite right. At Buttercup Farm they find acorns the size of soccer balls, a tractor the size of a toy car and sheep shrunk down shorter than a blade of grass.
Scarlett the Garnet Fairy’s jewel controls growing and shrinking magic. The jewel has to be really close and the girls start their search of the farm. One of the girls spots a glowing red light, shining down from the top of a pile of hay. As the girls begin their walk closer to the jewel, they begin to shrink and the scarecrow that is supposed to be watching the garden is now walking towards them. But how could that be, unless the scarecrow was actually one of Jack Frost’s goblins. Will the girls be able to help Scarlett?
