Lulu, who lives with her grandmother, is not a fan of pets of any kind. In No Ponies in the House! by Jeanne Betancourt, we find out just how much her grandmother is not a pet lover. The girls are paid a visit by Rosalie, Mikes little sister. She loves the Pony Pals and their horses and for the first time ever, she has a pet of her own. Reluctantly, her mother let her have a pet teddy bear hamster from school. But if she wants to keep it, her mother insisted that the pet not be a nuisance and be well taken care of, or it goes back.
Snow White, Lulu’s horse seems to really take to the little hamster. Lulu thinks the hamster is pretty cute too but tells Rosalie that her hamster would probably be safer and happier at home in its cage. Rosalie strongly disagrees with Lulu and goes back to playing with the horses. Next thing she knows, her cute little hamster has escaped her pocket and she has no idea where he is. Lulu helps Rosalie look for the hamster but they don’t find him. Instead, her horse Snow White does. Lulu returns the little guy to Rosalie but only if she puts him in a traveling box for safe keeping.
The two girls bring the hamster into Lulu’s room to find a good box to use when her grandmother comes in. Rosalie is so excited about her pet she tells Lulu’s grandmother all about him. She is highly upset to see a rodent of all things in her house. The girls are warned to get the hamster out immediately and she reminds Lulu that there are to be no pets in the house, especially rodents. The girls get the box all put together with holes in the top and head out.
Rosalie and Lulu are in the kitchen and while checking in on the hamster, Rosalie is surprised to see that he is gone. In the bottom corner of the box, the little guy chewed a hole and escaped. This is bad, really bad. It doesn’t take long for Lulu’s grandmother to find out about the missing rodent in her house and has threatened to call the exterminator. Lulu convinces her to give her, Pam and Anna until morning to find the hamster before calling the exterminator. Not having any luck in the search, the only idea they can come up with is recruiting Snow White’s help again, but that would mean sneaking a pony into the kitchen.
