When you think of kids’ magazines, you might remember the Highlights or Ranger Rick magazines from when you were a kid. Those were the days, right? When animal pictures ruled your world and ethics all came down to Goofus & Gallant.
But today’s kids have a wide variety of magazines to choose from—many of them quite educational. Here are just a handful of great young kid’s magazines you might want to check out.
Time for Kids: Now they can chronicle the world’s events just like you! A Time magazine with different categories for different age groups—Grades K-1, 2-3, and 4-6—it’s perfect for your curious young one. Topics range from space to careers and more. I’m betting my sixth grade teacher, who had us do current events reports, would have loved these magazines in her classroom.
National Geographic Kids: This is a favorite in our house. It comes full of beautiful pictures, a featured animal, a featured place of the world (including a bit on language, culture and even a recipe), activities (both on the page as well as ones you can do in your home), and more. We always look forward to this one!
Your Big Backyard: A Ranger Rick for younger kids, these magazines are about wild animals, too—as well as different activities, stories, recipes, games and crafts designed especially for young children.
High Five: Highlights for a younger crowd, High Five is also a favorite in our house. It usually comes with plenty of reading-ready skill activities, as well as much of what you’d find in a regular issue of Highlights, only age-appropriate for younger kids. One of our favorite things about High Five is at the end of each magazine, there’s a cut-out section featuring a game, puzzles, and other interactive activities. We still have some puzzles from last year’s issues that we like to play stored in plastic baggies.
Zootles: This new magazine is a younger version of Zoobooks (also a great magazine, which focuses on a different animal species in every issue) for little kids. Besides the animal facts in each issue, there are plenty of gorgeous wildlife pictures, puzzles and other activities for your animal lover.
Preschool Playroom: If your child responds well to characters such as Bear in the Big Blue House, Barney, or Curious George, he or she might enjoy this magazine. It’s based on popular children’s characters and includes matching, coloring, drawing and other activities.
