The Bailey School Kids: Ghosts Don't Eat Potato Chips
The Bailey School Kids: Ghosts Don't Eat Potato Chips by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones tells us a tale of a haunting in Eddie's Aunt's house. His Aunt Mathilda is sick with the flu and it's his job to deliver meals to her. Eddie's aunt is a mean old woman, living alone in a big scary house. Eddie doesn't believe in ghosts but his friends are noticing things going on in and around the house that don't exactly have any other explanation. Is the house really haunted and if so, by who?
Eddie hates that he has to care for his mean aunt by direct order of his grandmother. On his first trip, his good friend Howie comes along. Aunt Mathilda sends the boys out to water her garden before they leave. While Eddie is summoned back into the house to get his aunt a fork to eat her dinner with, something in the attic window of the old house catches Howie’s eye. It’s a dark figure…of a man and he’s looking right at him. Eddie thinks Howie has gone nuts and tells him he was just seeing shadows from the trees. No one is in the attic because Aunt Mathilda lives alone and she is sick in bed.
The word gets out about the man in the window with all of Eddie’s friends. They are worried for poor Aunt Mathilda being at home and the possibility of someone lurking around in her house. Should they call the police? Again, Eddie thinks that they have all gone crazy. If they are that concerned about it they can go with him to her house at dinner time and tell Aunt Mathilda about it themselves. When they go up into her room Howie notices a picture of a man on her nightstand. It’s the same man he saw in the attic window.
The more time they spend there, the more ghostly things they notice that they cannot explain. Eddie tries to brush it off cause there is no such thing as ghosts. His friends are just a bunch of babies. But soon enough even Eddie can’t ignore the fact that something strange is happening in the old house that could in no way be his friends or his Aunt Mathilda doing to trick him into believing in ghosts. Will they get the courage to go up into the attic to find out what is up there?
