The Adventures of The Bailey School Kids: Cupid Doesn't Flip Hamburgers
The Adventures of The Bailey School Kids: Cupid Doesn’t Flip Hamburgers by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones is just one cute book in a series about the kids at Bailey Elementary School. Now I know that it is nowhere near Valentine’s Day but I do have a daughter and she doesn’t always go for books matching the season. This one she picked out because it had hearts all over it so she knew it was going to be a good one! Fortunately for me it was because she insisted that we read the whole chapter book in nearly one sitting. It was good enough that we are going back to the library today to get a couple more out of the series.
In Cupid Doesn’t Flip Hamburgers the Bailey Elementary School kids are getting ready for Valentine’s Day. While working on handmade Valentines to pass out amongst each other lunch time nears. Their teacher, Ms. Jeepers informs them that they are going to be meeting their new lunch lady. When they walk into the cafeteria they are all shocked to see that the whole place is covered in pink and red hearts, including their new lunch lady, Mrs. Rosenbloom. Even her hair is red. Mrs. Rosenbloom loves Valentine’s Day and celebrates by making everything on the lunch line heart shaped, all the way down to the tomato slices.
Now Eddie and Carrie are well known classmates and enemies. Before lunch they had gotten into an argument and Carrie, who never gets in trouble, got in trouble. At lunch, Eddie gets jealous of Carrie, who always gets everything, because the new lunch lady gave Carrie a giant heart shaped sugar cooking topped with gooey frosting and a heart shaped pin to wear along with it. Eddie wants one of those cookies so badly until he notices that something just isn’t right with Carrie since she had her sweet treat. Carrie is now in love with him and won’t leave him alone! His friends all think he is paranoid but one by one, cookie after cookie, even the biggest bully in school turns all lovey dovey.
What is in those cookies? Or maybe it’s the heart shaped pin that Mrs. Rosenbloom is giving out. Whatever it is, Eddie is sure that she is using a potion or some sort of love spell and he is determined to get to the bottom of it before he gets a spell put on him too.
